Ladies Magazine and Literary Gazette is first published.

The magazine is published by Rev. John Blake from offices at today’s Washington Mall (then 41 Washington Street). Sarah Josepha Hale is the first editor and becomes the first female editor of a major magazine in the U.S. The magazine changes its name to the American Literary Magazine in 1834 and is purchased by and merges with Philadelphia’s Godey’s Lady’s Book in 1837.
